Sacred Tibetan Damaru Hand Drums: Chöd Practice, Tantric Rituals, and Buddhist Practices

The Damaru (Tibetan: da ma ru or rnga chung) is a small double-sided hand drum in Tibetan culture and is traditionally played by rotating the wrist to strike its drumheads alternately. It holds significant ritual importance in Vajrayana Buddhism, symbolizing enlightened consciousness and the universe's dynamic movement. Its sound, perceived as a vibration of awakened wisdom, plays a crucial role in tantric practices, cutting through ignorance and awakening the mind. Used by meditators and practitioners of advanced rituals, the damaru invokes enlightened beings, including Buddhas and protective deities, into sacred spaces.

Often referred to as the "heartbeat of enlightened consciousness," it embodies the connection between physical and spiritual realms, reflecting the impermanent nature of existence and the awakened state beyond duality. In Vajrayana symbolism, it represents mahasukha (great bliss) and conveys the inherent joy and wisdom of enlightened awareness. Its rhythmic sound fosters inner clarity and transforms fear and attachment, revealing the fundamental harmony of reality. The Damaru appears in the hands of Padmasambhava, Vajravarahi, Chakrasamvara, Mahakala, and numerous other Vajrayana deities as a symbol of their mastery over the play of phenomena and their ability to call all appearances into the dance of enlightened display. In practice, the Damaru is the essential companion to other instruments in Chöd and empowerment and puja ceremonies to mark the transition between phases of the ritual and to call the assembled wisdom beings to the offering.

Our Collection Highlights

Each Damaru in our collection is hand-crafted in Nepal by skilled artisans using traditional construction techniques, authentic materials, and the decorative conventions specific to each regional style of Tibetan Buddhist Damaru making. Available across a range of forms, materials, sizes, and mounting configurations, they are suited for active sadhana practice, Chöd, monastic ceremony, and significant collecting.

  • Wooden Damaru Ritual Instrument: Traditional hand-turned wooden body with silver skull-row banding around both drum heads, gemstone accent studs in turquoise and coral, and traditional silk ribbon ties, the most classic and widely used Damaru form for daily sadhana practice and personal ritual use.
  • Buddhist Altar Damaru: Compact wooden body with full silver skull-row banding, turquoise and coral gemstone accents, and traditional black cord beaters, a refined and properly proportioned piece suited for altar display and regular practice use.
  • Tibetan Ritual Damaru Drum: Featuring a distinctively vivid teal and orange painted wooden body with silver skull-row banding and bright red silk ribbon ties, a visually striking and energetically vibrant Damaru form evoking the festive, auspicious aesthetic of major monastery ritual celebrations.
  • Buddhist Ceremonial Damaru: Premium gold-plated metal-mounted Damaru with dense gemstone inlay of turquoise, coral, and lapis lazuli across the drum body and banding, an exceptionally ornate and visually commanding ceremonial piece suited for significant altar installation and monastery-grade use.
  • Buddhist Damaru for Ritual: Dark oxidized silver-mounted Damaru with skull-row banding and gemstone accents, a richly atmospheric piece combining the protective symbolism of skull ornamentation with the grounded, aged quality of oxidized metal.
  • Buddhist Damaru with Stand: A rare and exceptional museum-grade piece featuring the Damaru mounted on an elaborate carved and gilt wooden stand for permanent display, the most prestigious and formally presented Damaru configuration available, suited for principal altar installation and significant collections.
