Vajradhara Buddha: The Primordial Source of Tantric Wisdom

Vajradhara, whose name means "Holder of the Vajra," is revered in the Sarma schools of Tibetan Buddhism, particularly the Kagyu and Gelug traditions, as the Adi-Buddha, the primordial Buddha and dharmakaya source from which all tantric teachings and lineages emanate. Depicted seated in meditation posture, deep blue in classical coloring, crowned and richly adorned as a sambhogakaya figure, and holding a vajra and bell in hands crossed at the heart, Vajradhara embodies the union of skillful means and wisdom at the most fundamental level of tantric realization. He is often shown in yab-yum union with his consort, symbolizing the inseparability of bliss and emptiness.

Iconography and Symbolism

  • Crossed Vajra and Bell (Vajrahumkara Mudra): Vajradhara's defining gesture, with hands crossed at the heart holding a vajra in the right hand and a bell in the left, symbolizing the inseparable union of skillful means and wisdom.
  • Deep Blue Coloring (in Classical Depictions): Traditionally rendered in dark blue, representing the vast, unconditioned expanse of primordial awareness from which all tantric teachings arise.
  • Ornate Crown and Jewelry: Unlike simply robed Buddha forms, Vajradhara is depicted as a celestial, crowned figure, richly adorned in the manner of a sambhogakaya being, reflecting his status as the source of tantric transmission.
  • Union with Consort: Often depicted in yab-yum union, symbolizing the inseparability of bliss and emptiness at the foundation of Vajrayana practice.
  • Association with the Adi-Buddha: As the primordial Buddha in the Sarma tradition, Vajradhara represents the dharmakaya source from which the Kagyu and other tantric lineages of transmission originate.
  • Lotus and Moon-Disc Throne: Represents purity and the luminous clarity of awareness, providing a seat befitting the source of all tantric manifestation.

Our Collection Highlights

Vajradhara statues are cast using the traditional lost-wax method by Patan's artisan lineages, typically finished with a richly detailed crown, layered jewelry, and the crossed vajra-and-bell hand gesture that identifies him as the source of the Vajrayana lineage. Whether shown solitary or in union with his consort, each statue in this collection is made to serve as a genuine support for practice centered on the recognition of primordial tantric realization.

Core Materials Used

  • Copper: Hand-formed and hand-chased copper bodies, providing a warm-toned, durable base often left natural or partially plated.
  • Gold-Plated: Traditional fire-gilded finish applied over the cast copper body, the classic choice for shrine-quality altar statues.
  • Silver-Plated: A luminous, refined finish applied over the cast body, associated with purity and clarity.
  • Oxidized Copper Body: A darkened, antique-style patina finish, giving statues a weathered, monastery-style appearance favored by collectors of traditional pieces.

Gemstone Inlay

  • Turquoise: Vibrant blue-green stone, the most widely used gemstone in Himalayan sacred inlay, associated with protection and auspicious blessing.
  • Coral: Vivid red organic gemstone associated with life force and vitality, frequently set into crowns and throne detailing.
  • Lapis Lazuli: Deep blue semi-precious stone associated with wisdom and healing, echoing Vajradhara's classical blue coloring when used as an accent.
