Tibetan Long Life Vase Chegumba: For Long-Life Ceremonies, Empowerments & Monastery Altars

The Chegumba (che gum ba in Tibetan, meaning "long-life vase") is a highly specialized and iconographically distinctive ritual vase used exclusively in long-life (tse wang) ceremonies, longevity deity practices, and the most auspicious life-affirming rituals of the Vajrayana tradition. Unlike the general-purpose Bhumba, the Chegumba is designed and consecrated specifically as the vessel of long-life blessing, most commonly associated with Amitayus (Buddha of Infinite Life), White Tara, and Ushnishavijaya, the three principal longevity deities of Tibetan Buddhism whose combined practice is believed to extend lifespan, accumulate life-force merit, and remove obstacles to a long and meaningful life in the Dharma.

During a long-life empowerment, the Chegumba is placed at the center of the altar, consecrated by the officiating lama, and its blessing is transmitted to participants through ritual aspiration, visualization, and the offering of long-life substances. To place a Chegumba on one's altar is to maintain a continuous invocation of the long-life blessings of the enlightened deities, a daily reminder of the preciousness of human life and the aspiration to use every moment in the service of practice and awakening.
