Sacred Himalayan Dhyangro & Dakini Drums: Shamanic Ritual, Meditation & Sacred Ceremonies
A dhyangro is a sacred, double-headed frame drum that serves as the primary ritual tool for jhakri (shamanic practitioners) of the Himalayas. At first glance, it appears as a large frame drum: a circular wooden shell, two taut heads of goat hide, and a long carved handle jutting from one side. But for the jhakri, the shaman-healers of Nepal's hill and mountain communities, the Dhyangro is a vehicle. When the drum is struck, and the jhakri begins to chant, the drum becomes a vessel for the soul's journey between the human world, the realm of spirits, and the world of ancestors.
The word Dhyangro itself reveals its nature: "Dhyang" carries the meaning of "mind" or "awareness" in Tibetan and Nepali linguistic roots, while "Gro" refers to "drum" or "circular frame instrument", making the Dhyangro literally a "mind drum": a sacred object designed to align the practitioner's awareness with the spiritual energies invoked during ritual. In this single object, pre-Buddhist Himalayan shamanism and tantric Buddhism meet, overlap, and continue to coexist, a living spiritual synthesis that has been ongoing in the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding highlands for centuries.
A particularly striking member of the Dhyangro family is the Dakini Drum, a large frame drum mounted upright on a tall, ornately painted pedestal in vivid colors of turquoise, red, and gold with floral motifs and auspicious symbols covering the base and shaft. Striking the drum calls forth dakinis, the dynamic, wisdom-embodying female forces of Vajrayana Buddhism, echoing the vibrations of enlightened activity.
