Mitrugpa Buddha: Buddhist Deity of Healing, Negative Karma Purification, and Peace

Akshobhya, known in Tibetan as Mitrugpa, meaning "The Immovable" or "The Unshakeable One," presides over the eastern direction and the vajra Buddha family within the mandala of the Five Dhyani Buddhas. He embodies the transformation of anger and aversion into mirror-like wisdom, the clarity of mind that reflects all phenomena exactly as they are without distortion or reactivity. Depicted seated in meditation posture with his right hand lowered in the bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture, and often holding a vajra, Akshobhya's dark blue coloring symbolizes the vast, unmoving stability of a mind untouched by disturbance.

Iconography and Symbolism

  • Bhumisparsha Mudra (Earth-Touching Gesture): Akshobhya's defining gesture, with the right hand lowered to touch the earth, calling it to witness steadfastness against distraction and temptation, shared with depictions of Shakyamuni at the moment of enlightenment.
  • Blue Coloring: Associated with the eastern direction, the water element in some systems, and the vajra Buddha family, representing the vast, unmoving clarity of mirror-like wisdom.
  • Vajra Attribute: Akshobhya's emblematic implement, symbolizing indestructible stability and the unbreakable nature of the enlightened mind.
  • Transformation of Anger into Wisdom: Central to Akshobhya's role among the five Buddhas, representing the alchemical process by which aversion and anger are transmuted into clear, reflective awareness.
  • Association with Mitrugpa Purification Practice: In Tibetan tradition, Akshobhya as Mitrugpa is invoked in confession practices for purifying broken vows and negative karma, particularly transgressions against the guru or dharma.
  • Lotus Throne: Represents purity and the unshaken stability of the enlightened mind, undisturbed by the phenomena arising around it.

Our Collection Highlights

Each Mitrugpa (Akshobhya) statue in our collection is purely handmade in Nepal by skilled Newar artisans, offered across a range of finishes, sizes, and craftsmanship levels to suit personal shrines, monasteries, and gifting occasions.

Core Materials Used

  • Copper Body: Hand-made and hand-chased copper bodies, providing a warm-toned, durable base often left natural or partially plated.
  • Gold-Plated: Traditional fire-gilded finish applied over the cast copper body, the classic choice for shrine-quality altar statues.
  • Silver-Plated: A luminous, refined finish applied over the cast body, associated with purity and clarity.
  • Oxidized Copper Body: A darkened, antique-style patina finish, giving statues a weathered, monastery-style appearance favored by collectors of traditional pieces.

Gemstone Inlay

  • Turquoise: Vibrant blue-green stone, the most widely used gemstone in Himalayan sacred inlay, associated with protection and auspicious blessing.
  • Coral: Vivid red organic gemstone associated with life force and vitality, often set into crowns and ornamental detailing.
  • Lapis Lazuli: Deep blue semi-precious stone associated with wisdom and healing, used to accent crowns and robe borders.
