Ratnasambhava Buddha: Cosmic Buddha of the Jewel Family and Boundless Equality

Ratnasambhava, whose name means "Source of Jewels" or "Jewel-Born," presides over the southern direction and the ratna, or jewel, Buddha family within the mandala of the Five Dhyani Buddhas. He embodies the transformation of pride and arrogance into the wisdom of equanimity, the clarity of mind that recognizes the equal, boundless worth of all beings without the distortion of self-importance. Depicted seated in meditation posture with his right hand extended downward in the varada mudra, the gesture of giving, and often holding or accompanied by a wish-fulfilling jewel, Ratnasambhava's golden-yellow form is associated with generosity, abundance, and the enrichment of both material and spiritual life.

Iconography and Symbolism

  • Varada Mudra (Gesture of Giving): Ratnasambhava's defining gesture, with the right hand lowered and palm facing outward, symbolizing boundless generosity and the fulfillment of the wishes of beings.
  • Golden-Yellow Coloring: Associated with the southern direction, the earth element, and the ratna Buddha family, representing richness, fertility, and the enrichment of both material and spiritual life.
  • Wish-Fulfilling Jewel: Ratnasambhava's emblematic attribute, symbolizing the inexhaustible abundance and generosity that flows from the transformation of pride into equanimity.
  • Transformation of Pride into Wisdom: Central to Ratnasambhava's role among the five Buddhas, representing the alchemical process by which arrogance and self-importance are transmuted into the wisdom of equanimity.
  • Lotus Throne: Represents purity and the unattached nature of true generosity, given without expectation of return.
  • Association with the Ratna Family: Ratnasambhava heads the jewel (ratna) family among the five Buddha families, governing qualities of richness, dignity, and abundance.

Our Collection Highlights

Ratnasambhava is honored alongside the four other Dhyani Buddhas as a foundational figure in tantric cosmology, and his statue has been cast in copper and gold for centuries by Patan's artisan lineages. Each statue in this collection is cast using the traditional lost-wax method and finished by hand, preserving the gesture of giving, the golden coloring, and the jewel attribute that identify Ratnasambhava among the five Buddha families.

Core Materials Used

  • Copper: Hand-formed and hand-chased copper bodies, providing a warm-toned, durable base often left natural or partially plated.
  • Gold-Plated: Traditional fire-gilded finish applied over the cast copper body, the classic choice for shrine-quality altar statues.
  • Silver-Plated: A luminous, refined finish applied over the cast body, associated with purity and clarity.
  • Oxidized Copper Body: A darkened, antique-style patina finish, giving statues a weathered, monastery-style appearance favored by collectors of traditional pieces.

Gemstone Inlay

  • Turquoise: Vibrant blue-green stone, the most widely used gemstone in Himalayan sacred inlay, associated with protection and auspicious blessing.
  • Coral: Vivid red organic gemstone associated with life force and vitality, frequently set into crowns and throne detailing.
  • Lapis Lazuli: Deep blue semi-precious stone associated with wisdom and healing, used as an accent stone on finer pieces.
