He is believed to be 4th Zhabdrung Rinpoche. "Zhabdrung" title is referring to addressing great lamas in Tibet and in Bhutan. He is always refers to Ngawang Namgyal (1594–1651) known colloquially as The Bearded Lama. A Tibetan Buddhist lama and the unifier of Bhutan as a nation-state.
Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal also established two systems of administrative power in Bhutan: one led by the Desi, who was in charge of civil administration, and the other, led by Je Khenpo, who was in charge of the country's spiritual administration as the central monk body.
When the Bhutanese Monarchy took power in 1907, its role was rendered obsolete due to massive infighting among the succession of Desis. However, the Je Khenpo's role remains, and he is regarded as the spiritual leader of Bhutan's Drukpa Kagyu school of Buddhism.
