Crafted from a copper body with electro gold and silver plating, this large sculpture presents Vajrasattva seated peacefully upon an elaborate lotus pedestal. His serene face, ornate crown, detailed jewelry, flowing garments, and richly decorated base demonstrate the intricate artistry of traditional Himalayan Buddhist sculpture. The colorful patterned sections across his robes and pedestal add visual depth, while the combination of gold and silver surfaces creates a distinguished sacred appearance.
Vajrasattva is one of the principal Buddhist figures associated with purification, clarity, and the restoration of spiritual commitments. Introduction To Vajrasattva:
Vajrasattva is typically regarded as the second patriarch in the Shingon Buddhist lineage, the first being Vairocana Buddha. According to Kukai's writings in Record of the Dharma Transmission, Nagarjuna encountered Vajrasatva in an iron tower in southern India, based on Amoghavajra's testimony. As recounted in the Mahavairocana Sutra, Vajrasatva inducted Nagarjuna into the abhiseka ceremony and entrusted him with the esoteric teachings he had gained from Vairocana Buddha. Kukai doesn't go into detail on Vajrasatva or his beginnings.
