Description

Vajrasattva And Consort, Yab Yum Thangka

Our traditionally skilled Karma Gadri artisans have created a magnificent Vajrasattva Yab Yum Thangka. Dorje Sempa and Consort's white face is highlighted by an orange halo with delicately patterned gold. Dorje Sempa carries a Vajra in his right hand, and a bell left. The vajra denotes compassion, while the bell represents wisdom. He sits serenely on a moon disc atop a lotus seat, his legs crossed, suggesting that he stayed untouched by the unclean cycle of samsara for the sake of sentient creatures.

Vajrasatva is tied with sambhogakaya and cleansing practice in Tibetan Buddhism.
Vajrasatva is typically regarded as the second patriarch in the Shingon Buddhist lineage, the first being Vairocana Buddha. According to Kukai's writings in Record of the Dharma Transmission, Nagarjuna encountered Vajrasatva in an iron tower in southern India, based on Amoghavajra's testimony. As recounted in the Mahavairocana Sutra, Vajrasatva inducted Nagarjuna into the abhiseka ceremony and entrusted him with the esoteric teachings he had gained from Vairocana Buddha. Kukai doesn't go into detail on Vajrasatva or his beginnings.
