Hand-painted Traditional Thangka of Buta Damara With Mitrupa | Sacred Art
The Traditional Thangka of Buta Damara With Mitrupa is a powerful sacred artwork, hand-painted on fine cotton canvas using natural colors from Lhasa stones and finished with 24K gold. It is blazing with tantric force and wrathful compassion. The composition, in the elegant Karma Gadri style, balances a powerful central figure with expansive landscape elements.
Buta Damara is recognized in tantric Buddhism as a fierce manifestation that helps to subdue harmful forces, negative spirits, and deep-rooted ignorance. His fearsome look is not a sign of ordinary anger but reflects enlightened fury—symbolizing the most powerful and transformative form of compassion. Mitrupa, a prominent Indian mahasiddha and a lineage holder of advanced Mahamudra teachings, is depicted above as the spiritual origin and embodiment of ultimate wisdom. Together, they highlight the unity of realization and skillful means within the tantric tradition. This thangka depicts Buta Damara, with a blue body, three eyes, and a crown of skulls symbolizing the transformation of poisons into wisdom. He stands on a sun disc on a lotus, trampling negativities, surrounded by flames of wisdom fire. Holding a vajra and lasso, he signifies power over obstacles. A serpent garland, tiger skin, and wrathful face enhance his protective aura. Above, Mitrupa sits peacefully on a lotus within a radiant halo, representing the peaceful base of awakened awareness from which wrathful activity arises. The thangka supports tantric meditation and protection; invite it to your space to strengthen focus and protection.
