The Buddhist butter lamp features a wide, bowl-shaped brass vessel with a raised rim, rounded body, and tapered lower section. The copper holder depicts a standing figure with both arms raised, supporting the lamp above the head. The figure displays a peaceful facial expression, carefully carved garments, and decorative details around the arms and waist. Beneath the figure, a circular pedestal features layered lotus petals and intricate ornamental patterns. The contrasting brass and copper surfaces display warm golden and reddish tones, highlighting the traditional craftsmanship of this Himalayan altar lamp.

In Tibetan Buddhism, butter lamps symbolize wisdom, enlightenment, and the removal of ignorance through the offering of light. Lighting a butter lamp is a traditional devotional practice associated with accumulating merit, cultivating compassion, and making offerings to the Buddha and enlightened beings. The flame represents the light of wisdom that helps overcome darkness and confusion. This brass butter lamp with a copper holder is suitable for daily prayers, Buddhist ceremonies, meditation, shrine decoration, and sacred light offerings. It also makes a meaningful spiritual gift for Buddhist practitioners and collectors of Himalayan ritual artwork.

Introduction to Butter Lamp

The whole process of offering a butter lamp is also a very spiritual practice. The traditional practice of preparing a butter lamp starts by washing one’s hand, wearing a mask to protect from contaminating the butter lamp through one’s breath, making the wick out of pure cotton, and cleaning the chalices with a clean piece of cloth reserved for this or fresh mosses from the trees, which was commonly used in old times. The whole process is a meditative spiritual practice that engages a person physically and mentally if they know and practices it according to the norms.
