Thangka Painting Of Medicine Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru
The Medicine Buddha is depicted in lapis lazuli blue in this thangka painting. In the varadamudra motion, his right-hand holds a branch of myrobalan. His left hand, which is on his lap, has a lapis lazuli pindapatra, which contains medicines.
An ushnisha, urna, longed-lobed ears, and curly hair characterize the Buddha. He sits cross-legged and wears a monastic robe. The color blue, or lapis lazuli, on his body denotes that he accepts all of the sicknesses and illnesses of suffering beings. Myrobalan is a plant that signifies medicine that cures all diseases in sentient creatures.

The Lapis Healing Master is one of the most honored figures in the Buddhist pantheon. The sutras in which he appears compare his pure eastern land with the western paradise of Amitabha. Recitation of his mantra, or even the mere repetition of his holy name, is sufficient to grant release from the lower realms, protection from worldly dangers, and freedom from untimely death. In one of the main sutras concerning the Medicine Buddha, Shakyamuni tells his close disciple and attendant Ananda.
