The sculpture shows the Buddha in the Earth-touching mudra, with his right hand resting on his knee and his fingers touching the ground. He has a bowl of alms in his left hand, comfortably lying on his lap. This mindset symbolizes anchoring, enlightenment, and the connection between the Buddha, his students, and the land.

Shakyamuni lived to be eighty years old when he died. He remained at Gridhrakta (Eagle Peak) near Rajagriha the year before his death. Then he embarked on his final voyage, crossing the Ganges River northward to Vaishali. During the rainy season, he stayed in Beluva, a village near Vaishali. He became very ill during this retreat, but he recovered and continued to preach in numerous communities. He eventually arrived in Malla at a location known as Pava. After eating a meal provided as a gift by the local blacksmith, Chunda, he felt ill. Despite his anguish, he continued on his trek until he arrived in Kushinagar, where he laid down in a grove of sal trees and spoke his final words.
