The Buddha Shakyamuni, also called Siddhartha Gautama, is credited with founding Buddhism historically. Around the fifth century BCE, he was born as a prince in Lumbini (modern-day Nepal), but he gave up his life as a monarch to discover the truth about human suffering. He spent the rest of his life teaching the Dharma, including the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, to help others find freedom from suffering. He reached enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, after years of austere practices and meditation.
