Black and Gold thangkas have quite an interesting origin story. It is believed that the remains of a holy lama were applied to a canvas and later a deity was drawn upon it in with gold. There is also a strong faith that using gold in thangkas helps accumulate merits. As a guardian(Dharmapala), Mahakala guards the teachings, the Dharma, particularly in relation to the Hevajra Tantra, the Vajra Panjara tantra, and the Paramasuka Chakrasamvara tantra.
