Note: Amitabha Buddha Thangka is an original painting from Enlightenment Studio located at Boudha Stupa.

Amitabha is also known as Amitayus, the great rescuer Buddha, in Mahayana Buddhism, especially among the Pure Land sects. Amitabha was never as well-known as a savior figure in Tibet and Nepal as in East Asia, but he, as one of the five "self-born" buddhas (Dhyani-buddhas), is known who have lived forever. Because he bestows eternal life, Amitabha is known as Amitayus, or "Infinite Life." The two names are frequently confused in China and Japan, but they are never confused in Tibet, and Amitayus is a special rite for long life. He is pictured holding the ambrosia vase from which the eternal life diamonds fall, with decorations and a crown on his head.
