Introduction To The Stupa :
Great teachers were buried in mounds before Buddhism. Some were cremated, but others were buried sitting in a contemplative manner. They were hidden behind the earthen mound. As a result, the stupa's domed shape came to depict a person seated in meditation, much like the Buddha was when he attained Enlightenment and understanding of the Four Noble Truths. The stupa's base depicts his crossed legs as he reclines in a contemplative attitude. The center of the mound depicts the Buddha's body, while the top of the mound, where a pole rises from the pinnacle and is surrounded by a little fence, represents his head. Before the development of depictions of the person Buddha, reliefs frequently represented practitioners exhibiting devotion to a stupa.
