Original Hand Painted Tibetan Calendar Thangka Painting
Tibetan Calendar Hand Painted :
This Thangka is used as an instructional tool and auspicious talisman. This beautifully painted astrological chart brings good fortune to all those who possess it, see, or display it. This Tibetan calendar painting is a collection of astrological, calendar, and primary element symbols.
The central image is of a yellow tortoise - emanation of the bodhisattva Manjushri. It's lying on the back with the head to the top and the four limbs extended holding sticks with frogs.
In the center of the round flat belly is a circle of nine variously colored squares containing the 9 magic numbers. Surrounding, on a black wheel against an orange background are the 8 trigrams (Tib.: par kha ge) of Chinese origin. The outer circle contains the 12 animal figures namely: Hare, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog, Pig, Mouse, Bull, and Tiger representing the 60 Year Cycle.
The symbols of the planets on both sides of the special numbers are used to represent the days of the week. The sun, moon, eye, hand, arrow, kilaya, sheaf, and the head of a bird represent Rahu or Obstacles.
Tibetan Calendars like this have been used for centuries by monks in monasteries and by families in their homes. Beyond their practical utility, they're revered as sacred objects that connect us to the rhythms of the cosmos and the sacredness of time. When you look at a Tibetan Calendar Thangka, you're not just seeing a calendar; you're witnessing a profound intersection of spirituality, culture, and tradition that continues to enrich the lives of countless practitioners.
