Sacred Marpa Lotsawa Thangka | Founder of Kagyu Tradition

The renowned Tibetan Buddhist master Marpa Chokyi Lodro, the founder of the Kagyu lineage and a master translator, is portrayed in the Marpa Lotsawa Thangka. He was instrumental in bringing the profound Vajrayana teachings from India to Tibet. The spiritual core and historical relevance of Marpa Lotsawa's teachings are preserved in this sacred artwork, which was hand-painted by talented artisans in the Kathmandu Valley using traditional Himalayan painting techniques. This thangka, which is painted on handmade cotton canvas, offers a sturdy and genuine basis that is typically utilized in Tibetan Buddhist art. To create vivid tones, intricate expressions, and enduring visual depth across the composition, the artists use premium acrylic colors. A brilliant aspect that symbolizes the dignity of traditional Buddhist artworks is added by painstakingly applying genuine 24K gold to accentuate sacred ornaments, decorative features, and significant details.

The famous Tibetan translator and founder of the Kagyu branch of Tibetan Buddhism, Marpa Lotsawa (Marpa Chokyi Lodro), is shown in this thangka sitting majestically on an ornate throne. Wearing traditional Tibetan robes, Marpa is depicted as a devout practitioner, scholar, and lineage holder who made several trips to India to learn profound Vajrayana from renowned masters like Naropa and Maitripa before returning to Tibet with these teachings. Two significant individuals related to Marpa's life and ancestry are listed below. His most well-known pupil and one of Tibet's finest yogis, Milarepa, is depicted on the left. His distinctive greenish color represents his intense meditation practice and yogic insight. Gampopa, also called Gampopa Sonam Rinchen or Dakpo Rinpoche, is on the right. He was the main creator of the Dakpo Kagyu lineage and one of the most important masters in Tibetan Buddhism. He learned the profound teachings of Mahamudra and the Six Yogas of Naropa directly from the great yogi Milarepa.
