This Mahasiddha Naropa Thangka honors the sacred presence of one of the greatest teachers of Vajrayana Buddhism, like a tune of realization rising from the mountains. Naropa was an Indian Mahasiddha, academic, and accomplished tantric master who lived in the eleventh century. He first excelled academically at Nalanda University before abandoning his pride in his knowledge to pursue direct revelation under his mentor Tilopa. Naropa achieved tremendous spiritual awakening and rose to prominence in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism via hardships and insightful teachings. He is particularly well-known for the Six Yogas of Naropa, which are sophisticated Vajrayana techniques that Marpa and Milarepa eventually learned. His life is a symbol of devotion, metamorphosis, firsthand experience, and the journey from education to enlightenment.
