Description

Mahakala Bernagchen Thangka, Hand Painted Kagyu Painting

Mahakala Bernagchen looks wrathful, black-cloaked emerged from the clouds. He is black in color with three round eyes, a beard, large eyebrows, and hair that flows upward. He holds aloft a curved flaying knife with a vajra (spiritual implement) handle. His left hand holds a blood-filled skull cup. He wears a crown of 5 white skulls, earrings, bracelets, and a garland of freshly severed heads around his waist. His wrath is like that of a parent protecting a child from mortal harm. Fearful to fear itself, he adopts the appearance of the forms he is seeking to destroy.

Sometimes the power of great compassion is required in order to break the iron-grip of our obsession with what we considered solid, actual, essential, self or soul. The Archetype icon is, as a matter of fact, a portrayal of the model power that comes from inside oneself and is tackled to beat that self-image. Despite the fact that one might perceive the self-image to be a false, unbelievable construction, one is nevertheless primordially deeply loathe relinquishing the idea of its existence supporting us. So Mahakala, the archetype and defender, can be of fundamental assistance, similar to a fearsome ally, assuming one decides to take up war with one's inner self and negative viewpoints in the process of opening up the Buddha-nature, which is the non-ego, non-self, non-soul, unadulterated and all-knowing "clear light" nature of all beings.
