Guru Rinpoche With Consort Mandarava Thangka Painting With Natural Stone Colors
The Guru Rinpoche Thangka portrays him with his consort Mandarava seated on a lotus seat in deep blue water. He holds a vajra in his right hand and skullcap as he embraces his consort with his left hand. He is richly attired with lavishly patterned robes, a green silk scarf flowing through his consort's upper body representing their union. His hat is usually red, so Nyingmapa is generally called the red hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism.

When King heard the Gossip about Guru Padmasambhava and the princess, Mandarva, he ordered his men to punish Guru and tied him in the stack of firewood and set the fire. After that, thick smoke covered the whole sky for nine continuous days. When King went to see what was the matter, he witnessed a miraculous view that the place turned into a lake filled with lotus and in the middle was a giant lotus where Guru Padmasambhava was seated with his consort Mandarva. Inspired with the most profound faith and devotion, the King and his men confessed their misdeed. Under the guidance of Guru Padmasambhava, the whole kingdom began to practice Dharma.
