Hand-Painted Divine Buddha Parinirvana Thangka | Shakyamuni Buddha
Divine Buddha Parinirvana Thangka is a sacred hand-painted artwork created by highly skilled artists in the Kathmandu Valley, reflecting the serene passing of Lord Buddha into Mahaparinirvana. This thangka, meticulously painted on handmade cotton canvas using ancient Himalayan techniques, preserves the authenticity of centuries-old Buddhist artwork. Genuine 24K gold highlights accentuate the holy atmosphere of the enlightened setting, while rich acrylic colors give the composition depth, clarity, and spiritual vitality.
Buddha's Parinirvana represents the final moment of Lord Buddha’s earthly life when he attained complete liberation from the cycle of birth and death (samsara). It is not seen as death in the ordinary sense but as the ultimate realization of Nirvana, where all karma, attachment, and suffering are fully transcended. It is viewed as the supremacy of Nirvana, where all karma, attachment, and sorrow are completely transcended, rather than death in the conventional sense. According to Buddhist tradition, this sacred rite took place while the Buddha lay calmly on his right side between two Sal trees, surrounded by celestial beings, monks, and disciples who had come to attend his last lesson on liberation and impermanence. Parinirvana is often depicted with the Buddha reclining in a calm and serene posture, symbolizing perfect stillness, compassion, and wisdom at the moment of departure. His gesture conveys a profound sense of serenity, demonstrating that emancipation is a state of complete freedom beyond all material constraints rather than a depressing one. In order to convey the broad significance of his passing and the continuation of his teachings, attendants such as weeping followers, Bodhisattvas, and deities are depicted surrounding him. This potent imagery reminds us that enlightenment is possible and that all conditioned existence is ultimately fleeting.
