Its graceful form and refined details make it an inspiring object of devotion and contemplation.
The Kadampa Stupa is one of the most revered forms of Buddhist stupas, symbolizing the enlightened qualities of the Buddha and preserving the sacred teachings of the Dharma. Traditionally associated with relics, prayers, and blessings, its architectural elements each hold profound spiritual meaning. The square base represents stability and the foundation of the Buddhist path, while the rounded dome symbolizes the limitless nature of awakened wisdom. Rising above are the thirteen rings that signify the progressive stages toward enlightenment, culminating in the parasol and jewel that embody ultimate realization and liberation. This handcrafted stupa serves as a powerful reminder of mindfulness, compassion, and the continuous journey toward spiritual awakening, inviting peace, merit, and positive energy into any sacred space.
Introduction of Kadampa Stupa
Prior to Buddhism, great teachers were interred in mounds. While some were cremated, others were buried in a seated, meditative posture, covered by an earth mound. Consequently, the domed shape of the stupa came to represent a person seated in meditation, mirroring the Buddha's position when he attained Enlightenment and understood the Four Noble Truths. The stupa's base signifies his crossed legs in a meditative pose, the middle portion represents the Buddha's body, and the mound's apex, from which a pole rises surrounded by a small fence, symbolizes his head. Before human images of the Buddha were created, reliefs often depicted practitioners demonstrating devotion to a stupa.
