In Mahayana Buddhism, the Buddha of healing is called the Medicine Buddha, or Bhaisajyaguru. The lapis lazuli blue tint of his body represents his ability to heal. This thangka also shows other important Buddhist deities, such as Vajrasattva, the Buddha of purification; Samantabhadra, the Bodhisattva of universal goodwill; White Tara, the goddess of longevity and healing; and Green Tara, who represents compassion and quick protection. Together, these deities symbolize the interdependence of purity, compassion, and healing in Buddhist teachings. The images of White Tara, Green Tara, Vajrasattva, and Samantabhadra surround Medicine Buddha, who is seated in the middle of this thangka. Seated on a lotus seat, his calm demeanor exudes healing power and tranquility. His healing powers and the heavenly protection provided by these enlightened beings are highlighted by the surrounding deities.
