About Our Product
This Buddhist Khatvanga for Ritual Practice is a finely handcrafted Vajrayana Buddhist ritual staff created by artist Puspha Shakya in 2016. Measuring 44cm in height, 14cm in length, and 14cm in width, it weighs 1.2 kg and combines a pure silver skeleton head with a copper body finished using traditional fire gilding. The contrasting silver and warm gilded surfaces emphasize the carefully worked details throughout the staff, while the ornamental construction reflects the craftsmanship associated with Himalayan tantric ritual objects.
The upper section features a detailed human skeleton head made entirely of pure silver, surrounded by elaborate ornamental elements and two richly decorated figures on either side. Above the skull is an ornamental finial enclosed within a circular design, while the long central shaft is covered with finely carved patterns and extends into a decorated square base. The fire-gilded copper sections feature intricate relief work, floral and scrolling motifs, and carefully finished ornamental details. The combination of the skull imagery, tantric ornamentation, and fire-gilded copper construction gives the piece a distinctive ritual character.
The Khatvanga is an important ritual staff in Vajrayana Buddhist traditions and is particularly associated with tantric deities and advanced ritual practices. Its skull imagery is traditionally connected with impermanence and the transformation of ordinary experience, while the staff as a whole is associated with tantric symbolism and spiritual practice. This 2016 Khatvanga by Puspha Shakya is suitable for Buddhist altars, Vajrayana ritual collections, shrine rooms, meditation spaces, monasteries, galleries, and collectors of Himalayan sacred art.
Introduction of Khatvanga
In Tibetan Buddhism, the Khatvanga represents the enlightened mind and serves as a unique symbol of Vajrayana deities. It is traditionally depicted in the hands of Padmasambhava, known as the second Buddha. This trident, adorned with symbolic elements such as a vase, bow, and noose, reflects the union of wisdom and compassion. The Khatvanga also embodies the triumph over the five poisons: ignorance, attachment, aversion, pride, and jealousy. As a potent emblem, it signifies the ability to transform negative energies into spiritual growth and enlightenment.
