One of the main Kagyu lines in Tibetan Buddhism, the Drikung Kagyu lineage, was founded by Jigten Sumgon (1143–1217 CE). He received the whole transmission of the Mahamudra teachings and the profound yogic practices of the Kagyu school as a direct disciple of Gampopa and Milarepa. Jigten Sumgon founded the Drikung Thil Monastery in central Tibet, which became the primary seat of his lineage. He is renowned for his outstanding insight, profound compassion, and organizational abilities.
