Introduction of Enlightenment Stupa
Historically, before Buddhism, great teachers were buried in mounds. Some were cremated, while others were interred in a seated, meditative position, covered by a mound of earth. Consequently, the domed shape of the stupa came to represent a person seated in meditation, mirroring the Buddha's posture when he attained Enlightenment and knowledge of the Four Noble Truths. The base of the stupa symbolizes his crossed legs in a meditative pose, the middle section represents the Buddha’s body, and the top of the mound, from which a pole rises surrounded by a small fence, signifies his head. Prior to the creation of human Buddha images, reliefs often depicted practitioners demonstrating devotion to a stupa.
