Sakya Pandita Kunga Gyeltsen (1182-1251), also known as Sapan, was one of the five founding teachers of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism. He was Drakpa Gyeltsen's primary disciple and a close associate of the Kashmiri master Sakyashribhadra. Sakya Pandita received a rigorous monastic education and was well-known for his philosophical discussion, grammar, and poetics skills. He introduced Dandin's Kāvyādarśa, or Mirror of Poetics, to Tibet in the 13th century, which became a standard guide for literary writing across schools of thought. He also served in the court of Mongolian king Koden Khan, where he and his nephew Chogyal Phagpa invented the Phagpa script for Mongolian and contributed to the establishment of Buddhism in Mongolia.
