The Khatan has three expressive faces: a skull face, signifying the cycle of life and death; a serene face, representing tranquility and knowledge; and a wrathful face, indicating staunch protection against negativity. The tranquil and wrathful faces are adorned with delicate earrings, which add to their regal and spiritual atmosphere.

At the top of this sacred relic is a blazing Trishul (trident), a potent emblem of divine force that represents the eradication of ignorance and the path to enlightenment. The Khatan's base is completed with a half Vajra, representing the unshakeable power of wisdom and spiritual strength. Introduction To The Khatvanga :

Khatvanga is a stick with a skull on top, commonly used in Tantric rituals. It is also depicted in the hands of the oldest known Tantric pictures in the Indic world. It comprises a short stick topped by a single skull from which a vajra emerges.

The khatvanga had a profound meaning in the Tantric Buddhist environment. At its most basic level, it represents the opposite-gender counterpart of the equal or close deity who carries it.

Tsang Nyon Heruka and Padmasambhava are renowned for holding a khatvanga staff on their left shoulder.
