This is a Master quality thangka painting of Mahakala or Kalabhairava. Mahakala is a God common to both Hinduism and Tantric Buddhism. In Buddhism, Mahakala is a fierce form of Lord Vishnu, whereas, in Hinduism, he is a fierce manifestation of both Shiva and Vishnu and is the consort of the goddess Mahakali.

Mahakala is considered a guardian deity. He is depicted in a number of forms, each with distinctly different qualities and aspects. Mahakala is also known as Kala Bhairava or Mahakala Bhairava in Hinduism, and there are many Mahakala temples in Nepal.
