In Vajrayana Buddhism, Yamantaka’s fierce appearance does not represent ordinary anger. It represents enlightened wisdom in its most powerful form, like a blazing fire that burns away confusion and negative forces. Yamantaka is often shown with a buffalo head, many faces, many arms, and many legs, standing within a circle of flames. The buffalo head connects him to the defeat of Yama, the Lord of Death, while his wrathful expression symbolizes the fearless power to cut through illusion. His many arms hold ritual implements and weapons, showing his ability to remove different kinds of obstacles. The flames around him represent wisdom, energy, purification, and the transformation of destructive emotions into awakened awareness.
