Oil Lamp Collection: Altar lamp of the Himalayan tradition
Oil Lamp Collection: Altar lamp of the Himalayan tradition
The oil lamp is the oldest and most universal act of sacred offering across the Himalayan tradition. Our Oil Lamp Collection brings together the finest traditional Nepalese lamp forms in brass, bronze, and copper, each handmade by artisans of the Kathmandu Valley and suited to Buddhist, Hindu, and Bon altar practice.
Lotus-based oil lamp: A sacred form
A wide, shallow oil basin rests on a broad, elaborately carved lotus-petal base, each oval medallion individually repousse-hammered and separated by a fine beaded border. The warm aged brass patina speaks to the piece's authenticity. A lamp of quiet authority, suited to any altar.
The first and most enduring sacred flame
Oil lamps have been an important part of light-offering rituals in the Himalayan region since ancient India. They have spread through Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan to the present day. These lamps are made up of three parts: a container, a fuel source, and a wick. The lotus-base lamps from the Kathmandu Valley are some of the most artistic examples. It is an altar lamp that can be used for daily worship, meditation, shrine offerings, and decoration in Buddhist, Hindu, and Bon practices.
