Sacred Tibetan & Himalayan Metal Thangkas: Sacred Wall Display & Himalayan Interior Design
The Metal Thangka represents one of the most technically demanding, visually powerful, and culturally distinctive art forms to emerge from the sacred metalworking tradition of the Kathmandu Valley. Where a painted thangka captures the deity's form in the two-dimensional vocabulary of mineral pigment on cotton, the Metal Thangka renders the same iconography in three-dimensional sculptural relief, the deity's form, mandala, auspicious symbols, and surrounding iconographic program emerging from the hammered metal surface with a tactile physicality and a play of reflected light that is unique to this ancient Newari craft tradition.
The technique of repoussé is from the French repousser, "to push back" involves working the metal from behind with specialized hammers and punches to create raised forms on the front surface, then refining the detail from the front with chasing tools to achieve the precise iconographic accuracy required by Vajrayana convention. Practiced in the workshops of Patan and Bhaktapur for over a millennium, this tradition produced the great gilded deity facades of the Kathmandu Valley's medieval temples and the intricate metal relief panels that adorned monastery walls, portable shrine boxes, and the doors of sacred enclosures across the Himalayan world.
Our Collection Highlights
Each Metal Thangka in our collection is hand-crafted in Nepal by master repoussé artisans working within the living Newari metalwork tradition of the Kathmandu Valley. Available across a range of deity-specific designs, materials, sizes, and surface treatments — from gemstone-inlaid scroll-form panels to large standing relief plaques — suited for shrine room installation, sacred wall display, and significant collecting.
-
Sacred Deities Metal Thangka: A richly detailed repoussé relief panel depicting many Buddhist deities in full iconographic completeness with surrounding auspicious elements, particularly auspicious for long-life, wealth, health, or many more practice altars and meditation spaces dedicated to deity sadhana.
- Exclusive Himalayan Metal Thangka: A premium gemstone-inlaid scroll-form panel featuring elaborate turquoise and coral stone setting around a central deity relief, one of the most technically refined and materially precious pieces in the collection, combining the repoussé tradition with the gemstone inlay craft of the finest Himalayan jewelry.
- Ashtamangala Wall Hanging: A large, square-format repoussé panel depicting the complete Eight Auspicious Symbols in dense, carefully arranged relief, a complete mandala of Dharma blessings suitable for the principal wall of any Buddhist shrine room or Dharma center.
- Kalachakra Mandala Wall Hanging: A large, square-format repoussé panel depicting the Kalachakra mandala in precise geometric relief, one of the most complete and cosmologically significant mandala forms in all of Vajrayana Buddhism, suited for practitioners of the Kalachakra tradition and sacred space installations of great ambition.
-
Seven Horse Brass Wall Hanging: A distinctively horizontal repoussé panel depicting the Seven Horses, a traditional Himalayan auspicious motif representing solar energy, vitality, forward movement, and the successful accomplishment of aims, suited for home, office, and sacred space display.
Why Choose Our Metal Thangka Collection
- Authentically Hand-Crafted in Nepal: Every piece is produced by Newari master repoussé artisans working within the millennium-old metalwork tradition of the Kathmandu Valley.

- Enduring & Non-Perishable: Metal Thangkas do not fade, deteriorate, or require special storage; they deepen in character and patina with age, becoming more beautiful over time.
- Wide Range of Deity and Symbols Specific Designs: Amitayus, Manjushri, Dzambhala, Green Tara, Kalachakra, Ashtamangala, Vishvavajra, and many more designs spanning the complete breadth of Vajrayana Buddhist iconography.
