Medicine Buddha: The Sacred Protector Against Illness, Suffering, and Delusion

Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha, is revered across Tibetan, Newar, and broader Mahayana Buddhist traditions as the embodiment of healing, invoked for the alleviation of physical illness, mental affliction, and the deeper suffering rooted in ignorance. Depicted seated in a meditation posture with a deep blue-lapis coloring in many traditional forms or rendered in gold in devotional statuary, Medicine Buddha holds the myrobalan fruit, a healing herb, in his right hand extended in the gesture of giving, and a begging bowl filled with healing nectar in his lap. His practice is widely performed for the sick, before medical procedures, and as a general aspiration for the well-being of oneself and others.

Iconography and Symbolism

  • Myrobalan Fruit (Healing Herb): Held in the right hand, often extended downward in the gesture of giving, symbolizing the medicine that cures both physical illness and the deeper afflictions of the mind.
  • Begging Bowl with Healing Nectar: Held in the lap, the bowl contains the nectar of healing, representing the boundless remedy Medicine Buddha offers to all beings who call upon him.
  • Blue Lapis Coloring: In many traditional depictions, Medicine Buddha is rendered in deep blue, associated with the radiant, healing light said to emanate from his body, though gold-toned devotional forms are equally common.
  • Varada Mudra (Gesture of Giving): The lowered right hand, palm facing outward, conveys the offering of healing and the fulfillment of wishes for well-being.
  • Association with the Seven Medicine Buddhas: Bhaisajyaguru is often considered chief among a group of seven healing Buddhas, each associated with a particular aspect of physical and spiritual healing.
  • Lotus Throne: Represents purity and the unshaken compassion underlying the healing activity Medicine Buddha performs for suffering beings.

Our Collection Highlights

Each Medicine Buddha statue in our collection is handmade in Nepal by skilled Newar artisans and offered in a range of finishes, sizes, and levels of craftsmanship to suit personal shrines, care settings, and gifting occasions.

Core Materials Used

  • Copper Body: Hand-made and hand-chased copper bodies, providing a warm-toned, durable base often left natural or partially plated.
  • Gold-Plated: Traditional fire-gilded finish applied over the cast copper body, the classic choice for shrine-quality altar statues.
  • Silver-Plated: A luminous, refined finish applied over the cast body, associated with purity and clarity.
  • Oxidized Copper Body: A darkened, antique-style patina finish, giving statues a weathered, monastery-style appearance favored by collectors of traditional pieces.

Gemstone Inlay

  • Turquoise: Vibrant blue-green stone, the most widely used gemstone in Himalayan sacred inlay, associated with protection and auspicious blessing.
  • Coral: Vivid red organic gemstone associated with life force and vitality, often set into crowns and ornamental detailing.
  • Lapis Lazuli: Deep blue semi-precious stone associated with wisdom and healing, used to accent crowns and robe borders.
