Bodhisattva: Compassionate Beings on the Path to Enlightenment

In the context of Mahayana Buddhism, the Bodhisattva represents the compassionate embodiment of a selfless commitment to the well-being of all sentient beings. The term "Bodhisattva" is derived from the Sanskrit words "bodhi," signifying enlightenment, and "sattva," meaning conscious being. Early Mahayana texts, such as the Mahayana Sutras, emphasized the aspiration to become a Buddha to liberate others, which is the foundational concept of the Bodhisattva.

A bodhisattva is a being who has generated bodhicitta, the aspiration to attain full enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings, and who postpones final liberation in order to continue guiding others along the path. Bodhisattvas embody specific enlightened qualities in vivid, often multi-armed and multi-headed forms; compassion, wisdom, protection, and purification each find their own distinct iconographic expression across the bodhisattva pantheon.

Our Collection Highlights

Each bodhisattva statue in our collection is purely handmade in Nepal by skilled Newar artisans using traditional lost-wax casting and hand-finishing techniques, offered across a wide range of finishes, sizes, and craftsmanship levels suited to personal shrines, monasteries, and gifting occasions.

Core Materials Used

  • Copper: Hand-formed and hand-chased copper bodies, providing a warm-toned, durable base often left natural or partially plated.
  • Gold-Plated: Traditional fire-gilded finish applied over the cast copper body, the classic choice for shrine-quality altar statues.
  • Silver-Plated: A luminous, refined finish applied over the cast body, associated with purity and clarity.
  • Oxidized Copper Body: A darkened, antique-style patina finish, giving statues a weathered, monastery-style appearance favored by collectors of traditional pieces.

Gemstone Inlay

  • Turquoise: Vibrant blue-green stone, the most widely used gemstone in Himalayan sacred inlay, associated with protection and auspicious blessing.
  • Coral: Vivid red organic gemstone associated with life force and vitality, frequently set into crowns and throne detailing.
  • Lapis Lazuli: Deep blue semi-precious stone associated with wisdom and healing, used as an accent stone on finer pieces.

Key Items in This Collection

  • 1000 Armed Chenrezig: The thousand-armed form of Avalokiteshvara, embodying boundless compassion extended to all beings without exception.
  • Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara): The bodhisattva of compassion, among the most widely venerated figures across the Himalayan Buddhist world.
  • Cundi: A multi-armed bodhisattva associated with purification and the fulfillment of spiritual aspirations.
  • Dukar (Sitatapatra): The White Parasol Deity, invoked for protection against obstacles and harm.
  • Kshitigarbha: The bodhisattva of the earth treasury, honored for compassion toward beings in lower realms and difficult circumstances.
  • Manjushri: The bodhisattva of wisdom, depicted wielding the sword that cuts through ignorance.
  • Naga Kanya: A serpent-associated female figure connected to the naga lineage and the safeguarding of sacred teachings.
  • Namasangiti: A form associated with the recitation of Manjushri's names, embodying the totality of enlightened wisdom.
  • Marichi: The goddess of light and dawn, invoked for protection and the removal of obstacles.
  • Prajna Paramita: The personification of the Perfection of Wisdom, the mother of all Buddhas.
  • Vajrapani: The bodhisattva of power, wielding the vajra as protector and remover of obstacles.

Iconography and Symbolism

  • Multiple Arms and Heads: Common across many bodhisattva forms, symbolizing the simultaneous capacity to perceive suffering and act to relieve it in countless directions at once.
  • Crown and Rich Ornamentation: Reflects the bodhisattva's sambhogakaya status, distinguishing these forms from the simply robed historical Buddha.
  • Specific Hand Implements: Each bodhisattva carries distinct attributes, a sword for Manjushri's wisdom, a vajra for Vajrapani's power, a lotus for Chenrezig's compassion, identifying their particular enlightened function.
  • Radiating Aureole: Frequently shown behind multi-armed forms, representing the boundless extension of the bodhisattva's activity across all directions.
  • Association with the Bodhisattva Vow: Central to all forms in this collection, representing the commitment to remain engaged in the world until every being is liberated from suffering.
