Tibetan Ghau Collection
Tibetan Ghau Collection
Largest Selection of Handmade Ritual Tibetan Ghau Amulet Boxes: Protection, Devotion & Daily Practice
The Tibetan Ghau (ga'u in Tibetan) is a portable shrine traditionally worn as a pendant or carried during travel. It is designed to hold sacred items such as mantras, small Buddha images, or relics, providing spiritual protection, blessings, and connection to the Three Jewels. Owning a Ghau encourages mindfulness, devotion, and meditation, making it both a practical ritual tool and a cherished spiritual artefact. Traditionally worn around the neck or carried close to the body, the Ghau is a small metal reliquary case featuring an arched or shaped front panel with a central window opening through which a sacred image, deity statue, relic, or folded mantra scroll can be seen and venerated. The interior of the Ghau holds the practitioner's most personal sacred small statue of one's yidam or principal deity, a photograph or image of one's root lama, a consecrated mantra scroll, or a sacred relic blessed by a great teacher, making the Ghau a continuously present, wearable field of protection and blessing that accompanies the practitioner through every moment of daily life.
The Ghau's outer surface is itself a devotional artwork: the front panel is typically embossed or repoussé-worked with the image of a primary deity or other protective and auspicious figures, surrounded by elaborate floral scrollwork, lotus patterns, auspicious symbols, and gemstone inlay. In the Tibetan nomadic and monastic tradition alike, the Ghau was an indispensable companion: carried on long journeys across the high plateau, worn during festivals and ceremonies, and placed upon the altar at day's end as a portable shrine that transformed any space, however temporary, into a sacred environment.
