Sacred Tibetan Buddhist Stupas: Hand-Crafted Copper, Brass, Silver & Gold-Plated Chortens

What is a Stupa?

The Stupa (Tibetan: Chorten "basis of offerings") is a significant and ancient sacred monument in Buddhism, symbolizing the enlightened mind of the Buddha. Initially a funerary mound in pre-Buddhist India for noble remains, it transformed into a sacred reliquary after the Buddha's death, serving as a site for veneration and merit accumulation.

The story of the Stupa begins in the 5th century BCE, shortly after Buddha Shakyamuni's Parinirvana; his cremated relics were distributed among eight royal clans, each creating a Stupa to house the relics. This act established the basis for Buddhist sacred architecture, which proliferated across Asia over two thousand years.

In Tibetan Vajrayana tradition, the Stupa is understood as a three-dimensional mandala of the enlightened cosmos. Its architectural elements correspond precisely to the five elements and the five wisdoms: the square base represents earth and the wisdom of equanimity; the dome represents water and mirror-like wisdom; the spire represents fire and discriminating wisdom; the crescent represents air and all-accomplishing wisdom; and the sun and moon finial represents space and the wisdom of the Dharmadhatu.

Types of Stupas in Tibetan Buddhist Tradition

The Tibetan tradition recognizes eight principal Stupa forms, each commemorating a major event in the life of Buddha Shakyamuni and carrying specific blessings and associations:

  • Stupa of Heaped Lotuses (Padmachorten): Commemorating the Buddha's birth at Lumbini, this Stupa features a lotus-adorned base symbolizing the purity of the enlightened mind arising from the conditions of the world.
  • Stupa of Enlightenment (Changchub Chorten): The most widely recognized form, commemorating the Buddha's attainment of enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree at Bodhgaya. Its broad, rounded dome symbolizes the fullness of awakened awareness.
  • Stupa of the Turning of the Wheel (Tashigomang): Commemorating the Buddha's first teaching at Sarnath, adorned with multiple decorative niches housing deity images, representing the multifaceted richness of the Dharma.
  • Stupa of Miracles (Chorten Trulpai): Commemorating the Buddha's display of miraculous powers at Shravasti, featuring an elongated form expressing the extraordinary qualities of the enlightened mind.
  • Stupa of Descent from Heaven (Lhabab Chorten): Commemorating the Buddha's descent from Tushita Heaven after teaching his mother, featuring distinctive staircase elements on each of the four sides.
  • Stupa of Reconciliation (Yendum Chorten): Commemorating the reconciliation of the Sangha following a schism, its form expresses the harmony and unity of the Buddhist community.
  • Stupa of Complete Victory (Namgyal Chorten): Commemorating the Buddha's prolonging of his lifespan, associated with long-life practices and the blessings of longevity for all beings.
  • Stupa of Nirvana (Nyangde Chorten): Commemorating the Buddha's Parinirvana at Kushinagar, its bell-shaped dome expresses the complete dissolution into the unborn, undying nature of reality.
