What is a Stupa?

The Stupa (Tibetan: Chorten "basis of offerings") is a significant and ancient sacred monument in Buddhism, symbolizing the enlightened mind of the Buddha. Initially a funerary mound in pre-Buddhist India for noble remains, it transformed into a sacred reliquary after the Buddha's death, serving as a site for veneration and merit accumulation.

The story of the Stupa begins in the 5th century BCE, shortly after Buddha Shakyamuni's Parinirvana; his cremated relics were distributed among eight royal clans, each creating a Stupa to house the relics.
