Sacred Tibetan Bell (Ghanta/Drilbu): Ritual Bells for Empowerment Ceremonies, Altar Use & Decor
The Bell (Ghanta in Sanskrit, Drilbu in Tibetan) is the essential wisdom counterpart to the Vajra in Vajrayana Buddhist ritual practice. Held in the left hand during sadhana, the Bell embodies prajna, the penetrating wisdom that directly realizes emptiness, the true nature of all phenomena. Its resonant tone, produced while ringing it during specific points in a ritual, is understood not as mere sound but as the audible expression of emptiness itself, pervasive, all-encompassing, and dissolving instantly back into silence, just as all phenomena arise and dissolve within the nature of mind.
The dome of the Bell traditionally represents the wisdom of emptiness, while the handle is crowned with a half-vajra, uniting the bell with the symbolism of its ritual partner even when held alone. The specific deity face often cast into the bell's handle base, most commonly Prajnaparamita, the embodiment of the Perfection of Wisdom, further consecrates the instrument as a direct emanation of the wisdom it represents. The Bell is rung throughout empowerment ceremonies, deity sadhana, and daily offering practice, marking the dissolution of ordinary perception into the vast expanse of wisdom awareness.
Beyond its central role in tantric sadhana and empowerment ceremonies, the Bell also has a long history as a hanging temple and household bell, sounded by the wind or by hand to clear negative energy, invite auspiciousness, and mark sacred space, making it equally at home as a devotional ritual implement and as a beautiful piece of spiritual decor.
