Introduction of Kapala

In Tibetan Buddhism, the Kapala or Skull Cup is used ritually to hold offerings such as wine, butter, or grain, symbolizing generosity and the offering of the seven symbolic items: water for drinking, washing, flowers, incense, light, perfume, and food. These offerings are often visualized as transforming into the seven aspects of a deity's enlightened mind. The Kapala is typically crafted from brass or silver and features intricate designs, including the Kirtimukha, a mythical creature with a wide mouth depicted below the rim. This design is believed to ward off evil spirits and prevent them from interfering with the offerings. The Kirtimukha also symbolizes the transformation of negative energies into positive ones. Some Kirtimukhas are also adorned with a crown, indicating their regal nature. In Buddhist rituals, the Kapala is frequently used in ceremonies and prayers to honor deities and cultivate virtues such as generosity and compassion.
