About our Prayer Wheel
This Tibetan Prayer Wheel with Carved Mantras features a decorated brass and copper prayer wheel suspended within a handcrafted wooden frame. Measuring 17cm in height and 15cm in width, it weighs 0.32 kg and combines wood, brass, copper, coral, and turquoise stones. Its compact framed design allows the prayer wheel to be displayed securely while retaining its traditional devotional character.
The central wheel is surrounded by bands of Tibetan mantra inscriptions and raised decorative details. Several circular panels display seated Buddhist figures, while red coral and turquoise stones are arranged around the upper and lower sections of the wheel. The wooden stand is shaped with rounded supports and carved patterns along its top and base, creating a balanced frame around the rotating cylinder.
Prayer wheels are traditionally rotated as part of Tibetan Buddhist devotional practice, often alongside mantra recitation and contemplation. This piece can be placed on a Buddhist altar, meditation table, prayer space, or shelf. Its combination of carved wood, decorated metalwork, mantra inscriptions, and colorful stone accents makes it a distinctive piece of Himalayan Buddhist art.
Introduction to Prayer Wheel
A prayer wheel is cylindrical on a spindle and is used in Tibetan Buddhism. It is typically inscribed with the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" and rotated by hand as a form of spiritual practice and to accumulate merit. Spinning the wheel is believed to have the same spiritual benefits as verbally reciting the mantra. The use of prayer wheels is widespread in Tibetan Buddhism and has spread to other cultures.
How does the Buddhist Prayer Wheel benefit us?
The benefits associated with rotating the wheel are numerous. It promotes knowledge, compassion, and bodhicitta in the practitioner and improves siddhis (spiritual powers such as clairvoyance, precognition, etc.). The practitioner can repeat the mantra as often as possible while the wheel is rolling, maintaining a calm, meditative attitude. A Tibetan Buddhist tradition holds that after a practice session, one should dedicate any acquired merits to the benefit of all sentient beings. Then three times Om Ah Hum. This is usually among Tibetans after finishing any Buddhist practice, including the prayer wheel exercise.
