Wheel Of Life Thangka

About The Thangka :

Our thangka is a finely detailed hand-painting of the Wheel of Life. We have painted it with natural-made colors and 24k gold. In the thangka you can see Yama, the Lord of death, holding the wheel that represents the way out of these worlds of suffering into the beyond (nirvana).

Introduction to Yama :

The figure holding the wheel of life is known as Yama, Lord of the death. The Vedas describe him as the first man who died, blazing the path of mortality down which all humans have since followed. He is the guardian of the south (the region of death) and presides over the resting place of the dead, which is located under the earth. It is said that the purpose of Yama is to protect Buddhism and Buddhist people. He represents impermanence and death and holds the wheel of life in his hooves. Duhkha is the Buddhist word for suffering. Buddhists believe that suffering is the true nature of all existence. The Buddha is present in each of the realms to represent the hope of escape.

Why should Thangka be kept away from water?

Thangka is extremely sensitive to water and readily bleed, causing stain in the thangka.  Water or any other liquid that is splashed or that runs down the front or back of the thangka can cause movement of the pigment, tide, lines, loss of dyes, and loss of ground.
