Introduction To Vairocana Thangka Painting :
Buddha and Bodhisattvas are traditionally depicted with stylized hand gestures called mudras. The word “mudra” is Sanskrit for “seal” or “sign” and each mudra has a specific meaning.
In the dharmachakra mudra, the thumbs and index fingers of both hands touch and form a circle. The circle represents the Wheel of Dharma.
The three extended fingers of the right hand represent the three vehicles of the Buddha's teachings, in particular the middle finger represents the 'hearers' of the teachings, the ring finger represents the 'solitary realize-rs'. The Little finger represents the Mahayana or 'Great Vehicle'.
Significantly, in this mudra, the hands are held in front of the heart, symbolizing that these teachings come straight from the Buddha's heart.
