About our Prayer Wheel

The Silver Prayer Wheel displayed in the image is a beautifully crafted traditional Tibetan spiritual tool, measuring 19 cm in height and 41 cm in width and weighing 0.510 kg. This prayer wheel is made from wood and silver, with the cylindrical part of the wheel intricately engraved with sacred Tibetan mantras. The fine detailing in the design not only enhances the visual appeal but also serves the practical purpose of invoking blessings when spun. The wheel is attached to a wooden handle, designed to allow easy spinning, a key feature in the practice of Tibetan Buddhism.

The craftsmanship of the prayer wheel includes two lines of inscribed sacred Tibetan texts carefully carved around the wheel’s surface. This symbolic structure represents the flow of positive energy and tranquility as it spins. The spinning of the wheel is deeply embedded in Tibetan Buddhist practice, where it is believed to transfer the prayers and mantras to the surrounding environment, infusing the area with peaceful and positive energy. The clockwise motion of the wheel mirrors the path of the sun across the sky, adding to the spiritual and cosmic connection of the act.

Inside the prayer wheel are scrolls containing thousands of written mantras, carefully wrapped around a spindle. The practitioner holds the wheel and spins it, releasing the mantras into the universe with each turn. This action is central to Tantric practices, where the visualization of mantras revolving around the body, particularly the heart and crown chakras, is meant to cleanse and bring healing. The silver prayer wheel's design, functionality, and spiritual significance make it a cherished tool for Tibetan Buddhists, embodying the deeply rooted belief in the power of sound and vibration to transform the energy around them.

Introduction to Prayer Wheel

A prayer wheel is cylindrical on a spindle and is used in Tibetan Buddhism. It is typically inscribed with the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" and rotated by hand as a form of spiritual practice and to accumulate merit. Spinning the wheel is believed to have the same spiritual benefits as verbally reciting the mantra. The use of prayer wheels is widespread in Tibetan Buddhism and has spread to other cultures.

How does the Buddhist Prayer Wheel benefit us?

The benefits associated with rotating the wheel are numerous. It promotes knowledge, compassion, and bodhicitta in the practitioner and improves siddhis (spiritual powers such as clairvoyance, precognition, etc.). The practitioner can repeat the mantra as often as possible while the wheel is rolling, maintaining a calm, meditative attitude. A Tibetan Buddhist tradition holds that after a practice session, one should dedicate any acquired merits to the benefit of all sentient beings. Then three times Om Ah Hum. This is usually among Tibetans after finishing any Buddhist practice, including the prayer wheel exercise.
