Introduction To The Thangka :
According to historical records, the Buddha himself gave specific directions for how the work should be carried out when the first model of the Wheel of life also known as Bhavachakra, was painted above the Veluvana Bihara at Rajagriha's entrance. The actions of Maudgalyayana, one of the Buddha's most important pupils, served as inspiration. By using his psychic abilities, Maudgalyayana was able to visit all living things in all realms of existence and see them in various states of joy or agony.
As a consequence, he learned the reasons for these various moods. The Buddha saw that there weren't enough individuals like Maudgalyayana to instruct everyone who need his instruction. He gave his monks the task of painting the Wheel of Life, which represents the many spheres of life and the underlying mechanisms that govern them, at each monastery's entryway. The image is successful in that it appeals to our imagination with its rich and potent images even if it is not precisely a factual depiction of worldly reality.
How to take care of your thangka?
-Hang your thangka in a traditional silk brocade
-Regular Inspection of your thangka; examine the borders and all attachments.
-Keep thangkas covered when they are on display but not in use.
-Rotate thangkas between display and storage on a regular basis, two to four times a year, to reduce the amount of exposure to light. Keep away from sunlight and humidity.
-Do not apply liquids or other materials to the surface of the thangka.
