Gautam Buddha's Feet Thangka

Introduction To The Thangka :

The Buddha Feet is one of the earliest images of the Buddha in the iconic (no statues) period of Buddhist art. Feet have been used as objects to represent the transcendent's anchoring. According to Buddhist belief, once Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment, his feet left an imprint in the stone wherever he walked. In another version, the young Buddha took seven steps after birth to indicate his holy dominion over the cosmos.

Gautama Buddha's footprints represent the Buddha's presence since they are said to be imprints left wherever Gautama Buddha genuinely touched the earth. At the same time, the Buddha Feet represent the Buddha's absence now that he has attained nirvana, and so serve as a reminder of the Buddhist ideal of non-attachment.
